Veronica Speedwell returns in another adventure filled with secrets and betrayal from Deanna Raybourn, the New York Times best-selling author of the Lady Julia Grey Mysteries.

Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her natural historian colleague Stoker's brother calls in a favor. On the pretext of wanting a companion to accompany him to Lord Malcolm Romilly's house party, Tiberius persuades Veronica to pose as his fiancée - much to Stoker's chagrin. But upon arriving, it becomes clear that the party is not as innocent as it had seemed. Every invited guest has a connection to Romilly's wife, Rosamund, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago, and a dramatic dinner proves she is very much on her husband's mind.

As spectral figures, ghostly music, and mysterious threats begin to plague the partygoers, Veronica enlists Stoker's help to discover the host's true motivations. And as they investigate, it becomes clear that there are numerous mysteries surrounding the Romilly estate, and every person present has a motive to kill Rosamund....

"There are a handful of authors whom I first discovered on Twitter, and whose repartee I enjoyed so much that I HAD to read their fiction to see if it measured up. Deanna Raybourn's the best example of that happy discovery. What a lovely person... and she writes marvelous characters whom I am certain truly exist, even if I know intellectually that they were made-up by the author's imagination.

In short, I've read everything of hers I can get my hands on, most assuredly including all the Veronica Speedwell mysteries. Each of them fits my goal for escapist fiction: Make me fall into another world to solve someone else's problems, and get me so wrapped up in the story that I keep turning pages until it's done.

This book in the series absolutely filled my need. Though the author owes me chocolate. I sat up until midnight reading, one night, despite having an early morning meeting. If I yawned, it's all her fault.

In a sense, A Dangerous Collaboration is an old (and much beloved) mystery trope: a set of people trapped together on an island during a storm, with a missing or murdered victim and an obvious perpetrator among the cast of characters -- all of whom have a credible motive for doing dirty deeds. It's even better when the sleuths (that'd be Veronica and Stoker, here) are themselves entertaining characters with personal issues of their own to resolve.

And so it is: Stoker's brother asks Veronica to accompany him to a friend's island castle by making her an offer she cannot refuse... which involves butterfly collections, duh. Once there she learns about the friend's wife, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago. And naturally circumstances put her into a situation wherein she has to find out what happened to Rosamund. While, naturally, she and Stoker try to work out their own fraught relationship.

Oh dear, none of my description conveys the most important point: THIS IS FUN READING. Veronica is delightfully unfazed by "what people think," she and Stoker are utterly believable (one thing I love about 'em is that they are truly FRIENDS), and I had a grand time trying to identify whodunnit.

Theoretically you could read this book standalone, as little happens that refers to earlier books in the series. But why would you do that? Start from the beginning, and you'll get a lot more out of this story. I promise you won't regret it."

  • FINAL DECISION An exciting mystery and tons of romantic tension, this is an amazing addition to the Veronica Speedwell series.

THE STORY Veronica agrees to travel to an island off Cornwall in the company of her colleague Stoker's older brother, Tiberius. And circumstances being what they are, Veronica agrees to pretend to be Tiberius's fiancee. But when they arrive on the island, it is clear that something is wrong. Those in attendance have varying connections to the disappearance of their host's wife three years ago. Veronica and Stoker are thus thrust into an investigation of ghostly appearances and the mystery of what happened three years ago.

OPINION This might be my favorite of the series so far. I loved the interaction between Veronica and Stoker in this one. Angst filled and dramatic with a mystery that kept me guessing until the end. I'm sure that there are plenty of people who read these books for the mysteries, but I will be honest and say that while I enjoy the mysteries, I primarily want to know more about the continuing character stories in the book.

This book managed to not disappoint in either account. The cast of characters involved in the mystery was intriguing. I really felt that each character was well defined and interesting. The setting felt like an Agatha Christie novel. It was atmospheric and almost Gothic in its flavor. The haunting by the missing bride had so many interesting aspects and questions. I really liked how personal the entire episode felt even though Veronica and Stoker were not directly involved in the mystery itself. Here, they operate more as the independent investigators, although their own views and prejudices are evident here.

The relationship between Veronica and Stoker is a favorite for me. The story is nuanced and based upon the events in the prior novel, the two are in a different place which is not always comfortable or happy. I loved how the two circle around one another here. The emotional tone is raised high. I continue to love Veronica who has walls and is difficult at times. Veronica and Stoker have a special relationship that is uneasy and yet the two make such a perfect pair.

We also get to know more about Stoker's brother, Tiberious. I also found him an interesting character and I liked seeing his interaction with Veronica and Stoker. He stirs up a lot with these characters and thus is a welcome addition. (I hope we get to see more of him in future books).

WORTH MENTIONING Originally a five book series, the author has indicated that there might be more books contracted by the publisher. Yay!

CONNECTED BOOKS A DANGEROUS COLLABORATION is the fourth book in the Veronica Speedwell series. Each book has a self-contained mystery and thus is a standalone. However, there are character developments and relationships which develop through the series and thus the books are better read in order.

STAR RATING I give this book 5 stars.

  • I absolutely love this series and was super excited to learn this book was available. Mrs. Raybourn is a tremendously gifted writer and her Lady Julia Grey Series is among my favorites. The Veronica Speedwell books have been very well written with some fantastic characters including the main two - Veronica and her bosom buddy, Stoker.

Considering this is the fourth book in the series, the buildup of the romance between Veronica and Stoker continues to be a little slow to my way of thinking. Some progress is made in this book, and hopefully, we will eventually have a full fledged commitment between the two. Lady Julia and Nicolas Brisbane, H/h of the Lady Julia Grey Series are proof positive that a series can still provide great storylines that include romance even after the commitment to one another has been made.

In this book, we learn a bit more about Tiberius' and Stoker's relationship as the two of them and Veronica travel to a friend's home on a Cornish island, where they eventually learn they have been invited to solve the three year old mysterious disappearance of their host's bride.

Although there were some interesting bits, I found the supporting characters in the storyline to be sadly lacking. The most interesting supporting characters by far were Caspian and Mertensia, but Ms. Raybourn didn't do as much with their characters as I had hoped.

Having said the above, I will still re-read this series, probably this week. Overall, the books are excellent.
